Hab.la – chat to your site visitors using your IM program

Hab.la is a clever little chat service that you embed on your website to text chat with your visitors. It’s different because it lets you chat via standard IM clients like AIM, GTalk, MSN and others. It’s customisable and installation involves nothing more than dropping some code onto your website server. What it desperately needs though, is a WordPress plugin. You listening guys? Nevertheless, this is the cool.  Hab.la lets visitors to your website chat with you without any extra…

BumpTop – new 3D desktop for Windows

Tired of your old Windows desktop? Then why not try out BumpTop, a freeware desktop replacement which gives you full-on 3D visual loveliness? I’ve got to say I’m not a huge fan of this type of app, if only because I’ve found that they can sometimes break Windows in small ways, and there’s inevitably a performance hit from having all that luscious eye candy floating around. But if you’re into pretty, well here you go. It’s not just a desktop skin though,…

The Dark Side of Dubai – disturbing…

The Dark Side of Dubai is a disturbing Independent newspaper report on the nasty hidden world behind the glitz of this Middle Eastern ‘success story’. See also.  Dubai was meant to be a Middle-Eastern Shangri-La, a glittering monument to Arab enterprise and western capitalism. But as hard times arrive in the city state that rose from the desert sands, an uglier story is emerging. Tags: dark+side+of+dubai, middle+east, human+rights

The One Dollar Book – earn money by referring ebooks

Everyone lends other people books, it’s what makes them so social. I have purchased three copies of Cryptonomicon yet I only own one copy, I just keep giving them away. The 1 Dollar Book Company thinks this might be a neat idea and they have created a kind of Tupperware party plan around referring ebooks. The idea is you first buy an ebook for $1. You then refer the book to friends, as many as you like obviously, and for…

Hasta La Vista, Baby – Texans attempting to run Windows Vista outta town?

More Windows Vista woes. So the Texas Senate is trying to insert a budget clause which would make it difficult for state agencies to purchase Windows Vista? Yeah well, it couldn’t happen to a more awful piece of code. Yee-haw…  Sen. Juan Hinojosa, D-McAllen, added the provision in committee and said it’s meant to block purchases of the technology, which has been targeted by criticism: “Don’t buy it, because it’s not worth it.” Hinojosa, Senate Finance Committee vice chairman, said,…

China Crisis – the Asian electric vehicle onslaught begins…?

We’re going to revel in a bit of a ‘we told you so’ moment, regarding this week’s New York Times report on China’s plan to dominate the global electric vehicle market. Regular Ferret readers will remember we spotted this possibility way back in 2006. It is indeed gratifying to be such an insightful polecat.  Chinese leaders have adopted a plan aimed at turning the country into one of the leading producers of hybrid and all-electric vehicles within three years…The goal, which radiates from the…

List of troubled US banks – how’s it going for you and yours?

This List of Troubled US Banks comes from a few months ago, so it may be a little out of date, but it’s probably still useful as a gauge of how your own institution is doing on the safety stakes. Those with a ratio of 100 or more are at high risk of collapse, those with 50+ are ‘vulnerable’ (the ratios are on the far right column). Good luck.  This is a list of all of the banks in the United…

eRepublik – play a virtual world and escape from this one

eRepublik is an online virtual world game created in Ireland. Once you join up you’ll be able to topple governments, earn money, spend money, eat, laugh, chat and otherwise squander what little time you have left gazing at a screen instead of fighting for a better world outside in the sunshine. Makes perfect sense to us.  The game, called eRepublik, is set in a mirror world where players, referred to as citizens, join in local and national politics, set economic…

Good Guide – excellent product search engine offers ethical results

The Good Guide is an ethical product search portal. The idea is you can search for ratings, information and discussion on products that interest you to see just how environmentally and socially aware they are. We’re not just talking a few facts here, but a comprehensive overview of the company that makes the product, it’s ecological, social and environmental standing and where you can buy. The amount of detail per product is very impressive, from the single page you will…

Midomi – search for your fave song by humming or singing to your computer

Midomi is a music search engine with a difference. Instead of just typing in your search term, you can hum it. Yes I know it’s been tried before, but surely this time it could actually work? Er nope. I sang a beautiful rendition of Good Vibrations at it and the first result was something called Ni Una Sola Palabra. Close. What’s worse is the list included Vincent, Starry Starry Night. I know I’ve got a dodgy voice but c’mon guys……
