GazoPa – the similar image search

GazoPa is a new image search engine. Upload an image and the service will find similar looking items based on shape and colour. I tried uploading the bulletproof SUV image and the system came back with a credible bunch of results featuring grey SUVs, so from that point of view the thing seems to work quite well. Interestingly they all claim to be able to deliver results from drawings and sketches, which seems to give more patchy results as you…

Roving Cavaliers of Credit – the problem with current economic thinking

This Roving Cavaliers of Credit blog post from Naked Capitalism is an excellent read if you want to grab an alternative view of the current economic situation. It’s very long and detailed so be warned, but definitely worth the time if you have the inclination.  In fact, thanks to Milton Friedman and neoclassical economics in general, the Fed ignored the run up of debt that has caused this crisis, and every rescue engineered by the Fed simply increased the height of the…

snitch.name – social networking white pages

snitch.name is one of the reasons I’ve become a little uneasy about the current obsession with social networks. The tool offers a very basic service, just enter in a name and it will find all the social networks where that person is a member. Sounds cool, but in the wrong hands…? Anyway I guess it’s a pretty useful thing if you’re one of those who can’t remember which of the 20 communities you’ve signed up to, or to find lost friends maybe, so I won’t be curmudgeonly….

Zumba Phone – world’s first truly hands-free mobile phone?

The Zumba phone is being billed as the world’s first truly hands-free mobile phone, and it’s already had it’s moment of glory on the BBC even without a working prototype. There are two parts to this story. First the design sounds very revolutionary (or should that be evolutionary) in that the phone is designed to be kept tucked away in your pocket of bag, while you use the over the ear headpiece to make and accept all your calls.  …

Deluxe TV Etch A Sketch – just like a normal etch a sketch but bigger!

Be the envy of all your friends with the Deluxe TV Etch a Sketch. It’s just like the ordinary, every day, mechanical Etch a Sketch except it’s better and more exciting cos it’s big and on telly! Plug the controller in and choose your challenge, there’s Cool Drawing Tools, Trace-a-Pic, Super Sketch and Connect the Dots. They have tried to stay true to the original and so shaking the controller makes the picture go away, just remember that when you’re…

JJAD P1-E Electric Car – this ain’t yer grand-pappies golf cart, son…

Brit designer Jim Dowie used to work for McLaren F1, now he’s going it alone with the P1–E electric supercar. Not a lot to say, just some stats. 0 – 60 mph in 2.9 seconds 230 mile range £55,000 100% electric Good luck Jim, and don’t let the naysayers tell you it can’t possibly be done in a financial meltdown. They just don’t know their batteries from their boondocks, eh? Tags: jjad+p1-e, electric+car, ecological, motoring

Text2Logo – free logos, if you’re not too fussy

Spiffy Text (aka text2logo) is a free online logo creator. The idea is sound, although I must say the presentation of the site leaves a bit to be desired. Nice idea, shame about the package. Still, that’s probably churlish, since they’re offering the service for free (with a watermark mind you). So if you’re in the market for a cheap and cheerful plain style logotype, then this place is probably worth a visit.  www.text2logo.com is our original site, but this new…

PokeTalk – free international phone calls for all

PokeTalk is a new service which offers free international telephone calls from landlines and mobile phones. Put down that cynical face for a moment and I’ll run through the surprisingly benign rules. First, only 50 calls a month per account. Second, a maximum of 10 minutes per call. Finally, the list of countries is limited, as is the list of those nations which support mobile phone access. Nevertheless it’s a pretty interesting service. To use it, you just sign up…

Stuff2Send – world’s first P2P parcel courier service

Stuff2Send has got to be one of the most interesting if not totally bizarre ideas around. Basically it’s a peer to peer parcel courier service. People register with the site if they need parcels delivered or are willing to deliver parcels and the service matches them up. Hey, I can hear you asking, what guarantee that the parcel doesn’t just get stolen? Well…that’s a very good question children, and the site has a bunch of safeguards in place, including feedback ratings…

Blip FM – Digg for music?

Blip FM is a new service that offers up music in a continuous rolling front page stream. It’s got a shed load of voting options (hence the Digg reference) for DJs as well as tracks, and the community plays a big part in driving music and DJs to prominent positions on the site through favouriting and things called blips (aka votes) and props. It’s got a cutesy design, an impressive set of features and can be quite engrossing, which has got to be good. It’s nice…

Vista is Rubbish dot com – oops…

Ahh…so it seems that Stephen Fry hates Windows Vista too, eh? Well, there you have it. The uber-famous geek says it for all Vista phobics. To pour salt onto the wound, I stumbled on to the Vista Is Rubbish site the other day (while trying to find a fix for yet another problem). Unfortunately I’m also still not loving the Vista experience. In fact it hurts, every single time I have to click on that stupid stupid ‘Windows needs your…
