Fix for broken Windows Media Player plugin in Firefox

For some reason a bunch of sites still require you to have Windows Media Player installed in order to access their content, and it’s been driving me bonkers for ages, because no matter what I did, I couldn’t get the Media Player plugin to install into Firefox. It would appear to install, but then still fail when I then tried to access the media in question. The other day I decided to track down the issue, and it was surprisingly…

NetRadio – a tiny free Internet radio

NetRadio is a tiny freeware Internet radio program. Y’all know how much we love tiny and this puppy is no exception. The radio station details are stored in a plain jane text file, so all you need to do to add your own favourites is copy the station name and URL into the file and you’re good to go. Ultra basic, ultra cool. Hint: click on the tiny aerial icon on the right side of the scrolling station box to change stations….

Vitamin D – free webcam security software promises more accuracy, fewer wrongful arrests

The new Vitamin D security webcam software comes with ‘smart video’, which translates into motion sensing technology that can tell the difference between a cat and a burglar. Sounds good. There’s also a bunch of other features designed to make it simple to keep tabs on your mansion while you’re away, and the best bit is it comes in a free version (for 1 camera) as well as commercial ($49.00). Eat that villainous persons. [Via CrunchGear]  Motion detection can be…

DocFetcher – freeware delivers instant deep file search on your computer

DocFetcher is a cool freeware program which gives you the power to search deep inside your documents and folders. The software supports a whole bunch of formats, ranging from .doc, .ppt and .PDF to HTML and vector graphics files, which makes it very useful for finding stuff within a large collection of files. I like the simple interface and the fact that the indexing is nice and swift, around a minute to index 200 documents. But by far the most useful part…

Data Crow – the ultimate freeware data cataloging program

Data Crow is a cross platform freeware database program which is primarily being pitched as a media catalog manager, but which can clearly do much more. The program is Java based, which has its good and bad points – while it should run on any hardware that supports Java, it can also feel a little sluggish in operation, even with an empty database. The main section deals with managing your collection of anything from movies to music, books and photos….

Budget4All – freeware lets you check out your potential financial futures

Budget4All is a free household cashflow analysis program which helps you identify useful monetary ‘what-ifs’ in your life. This makes it somewhat different from conventional budgeting software which tends to look at historical data. The idea is you enter in the actual figures of your current budget – you know income, expenses, all that – and can then run simple simulations (e.g. what would happen if I lost my job? interest rates go up? gran leaves me $10 million?) to see how you…

Norton UAC – freeware banishes those maddening Windows Vista security prompts for ever

You’ve got Windows Vista and you’re totally fed up with having to click Continue each time you want to start up a program which Vista feels is ‘dangerous’. Time after time. After time. Behold, Norton UAC. This free utility sits on top of the Windows security stuff and lets you build up a whitelist of programs you want to start up automatically without the quiz and darkened screen. Tick the ‘Don’t Ask Me Again’ box and it won’t. Ever. It’s brilliant. And…

Instant Mask – freeware makes it super easy to remove annoying backgrounds from your photos

Instant Mask is a nifty bit of freeware which lets you quickly and easily remove unwanted background stuff from your photographs. The free version offers a fairly rudimentary erase process, but there’s also a $19.95 Pro version (pictured) which gives more power over things like feathering and area selection. The free version is great for simple masking tasks, like removing the odd object here and there, but you’re going to need more delicate control if you want to do anything…

eQuake Alert – uber cool Firefox plugin delivers earthquake shocks to your browser

eQuake Alert is a free Firefox addon which delivers earthquake alerts direct to your browser. The really clever thing is it shakes your browser screen as it happens, varying in intensity depending on the severity of the quake. I’ve had it installed for a couple of days and it’s pretty unnerving to realise how many quakes there are every day and how severe some of them can be. As I’m looking at the status bar now, I can see a 3.3…

FireTorrent returns! – super cool Firefox plugin makes BitTorrent crazy easy

FireTorrent is a free Firefox Add-on which embeds BitTorrent downloading in the browser. The result is total no-brainer simple downloads. Just click on a torrent link and the download happens as though you’re downloading a regular file, complete with the standard progress box. Yes it’s basic (there’s no dialogue at all as with conventional BitTorrent clients like uTorrent) and there are rough patches in the UI (for instance choosing a download directory via the options seemed broken for me, so…

SUMo – the free and useful sofware update monitor

SUMo is a freeware program which scans the skies and alerts you if your installed software programs need updating. This type of program is very useful if you tend to have a lot of freeware and other small utilities scattered around on your hard disk/s, as they save you time hunting down updates. And updates are very useful sometimes, especially as your Windows installation ‘matures’ (i.e. becomes klunky). Anyway definitely worth a look.  SUMo, which stands for Software Update Monitor….

TKexe Kalender – cool freeware photo calendar creator, make your images work for a living

TKexe Kalender is a freeware photo calendar creator which comes with everything you need to create decorative and nice looking calendars featuring your photos. The interface is rather spartan, but underneath the 1990’s look is a very sophisticated and flexible program indeed. There are settings to change just about everything in the calendar, including small things like adding thumbnail calendars and background gradients, so you should be able to customise to your heart’s content. In fact the only thing I…

GleeBox – freeware lets you ditch the mouse and use the keyboard for browsing

GleeBox is a Firefox or Chrome add-on which lets you navigate with your web browser using the keyboard rather than a mouse. If you’re one of those kick-back, leisurely type surfers you may appreciate the ability to arrow key your way around the Web. Just press g to activate and a page search bar appears, which makes for slightly faster searches than the Firefox CTRL-F combo. There’s a bunch of other stuff you can do with the tool, see the…
