Ocean Cleanup Works – now on to the next steps

Good news! The Ocean Cleanup’s device meant to clean up the ocean actually works! The first of the collected garbage has been successfully hauled back to shore after its successful test run. The company’s next steps are fortifying the device to handle the real deal garbage patch and figure out what to do with all that trash, both of which are harder than they seem.

Denmark’s Offshore Wind Farms – the country has big plans for wind power

Did you know that Denmark got 41% of it’s energy from wind power last year? That’s almost half! And the highest level in Europe. But they’re not content with just that, they want to drop their emissions down even further in the next ten years with carbon neutrality achieved in the next 20. and to that end, they have plans to build artificial islands surrounded by off shore turbines to generate even more power.

Making Memes Accessible – new system is able to identify memes with 92% accuracy

Memes are a form of communication. Even if you don’t personally get them or understand only a subset of them, that doesn’t change the fact that the joke format is one that is used to communicate a wide range of expressions. The downside is that they’re not accessible. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have trained a system that can classify memes with 92% accuracy making the accessible for sight impaired individuals.
